Hospice of Hilo’s new care center, the first of its kind on a neighbor island, celebrated its grand opening in June of 2012. The center welcomed its first patient in August of 2012 and has continued providing comfort and care to clients and their families in a home-like setting who are unable to receive hospice care at home or whose pain, symptoms, and special needs require a more acute level of hospice care than is possible at their residence.

“I don’t know where else my father could have experienced this, with all the love and warm feelings the Pōhai team provided. But a lot of people in their last days talk about regrets, but my father was not that way. He exuded contentment. For the care Hospice of Hilo provided, I will be forever grateful.” — Dr. Craig Shikuma
“I cannot say enough about the staff at the care center. They were so kind and compassionate. They heard it was our 62nd anniversary while Steamy was there so they purchased us a cake to celebrate the big day. From the beautiful surroundings to the gorgeous landscaping, my husband didn’t have to say it, but he was very comfortable in those last days thanks to the care and environment at the care center.”
