Holiday Dinner & Auction

Every year for the past eight years, staff and volunteers from Hospice of Hilo tirelessly pull together to present the Annual Holiday Dinner and Auction. The event, which has become a wonderful way to bring in the Holiday Season, is also one of the key ways Hospice of Hilo raises the funds needed to support programs that enrich our entire community.

It’s amazing to witness the reach of the event. There is an interplay between individuals, both known and unknown to each other, bringing together resources, creating a synergy that helps the event come alive. Everything from donated food and auction items to transporting an incredibly large and gorgeous
custom-made koa sideboard with cabinet doors made of rare curly maple wood generously donated by Ed and Cynthia Sorenson, is crucial to the success of the evening. The donated auction items come from our island and around the state, creating such a buzz around the silent auction tables that participants eagerly go from item to item, “pollinating” their hopes on what they wish to take home.

2011 event chef, George Gomes, Jr. of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, was so graciously humble as he shared how much care and detail went into the meal even to the point of brewing his own soy sauce for the menu items. “Everything was prepared from our heart. Dinner was from our heart to yours.”

With each passing year it seems harder and harder, within the limits of the English Language, to fully express the tremendous gratitude we feel for all the loving, caring hands of donors, sponsors, volunteers, staff and everyone that comes to the event, making the whole evening possible.

Extending from one heart to another, the Annual Holiday Dinner and Auction is like candle light passed from one person to the next, until an entire community is aglow with the warm light of love and compassion needed to sustain us all.
