The Hero's Journey: Teen & Keiki Six-Week Grief Support Group
Summer Session begins May 5th
When children experience the death of someone close to them they struggle with intense feelings of profound grief, just as adults do. Hospice of Hilo offers a keiki six-week support group designed for young people between the ages of 5 through 12. This specialized group uses a combination of art therapy, play therapy and group process and other supportive age appropriate activities to help young people process their grief following the death of a loved one. Pre-registration is required. Space is limited. Please call Aaron Yamasaki at 969-1733 for more information and registration. Group meets on Mondays from 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. in the Hospice of Hilo Community Center.

We invite you to a Mother's Day Remembrance candle lighting service featuring reflection and an opportunity to create a special art activity in celebration of the women who have shared your journey. Offered in partnership with Club Mud, this event is open to the public at no charge and welcomes all ages. RSVP requested, 969-1733.

Celebration of Life!
A Walk to Remember 5k - Run to Remember 5k - Lights of Remembrance

Hospice of Hilo invites the whole community to celebrate every day and to share celebration at this 4th annual family event for all ages from 4-7:30 p.m. at Wailoa State Park. Enjoy live music, plate dinners, remember loved ones and help raise awareness and funds to provide end of life care for our community. Join us in celebrating life!

A Walk to Remember 5k: Walk registration begins at 3:30 p.m. under the large Pavilion at Wailoa State Park., walk begins at 4 p.m. and wraps around Wailoa State Park. Raise $50 and register to walk by May 14 and receive the 2008 Walk Shirt and dinner at the Celebration. Awards to top fundraising teams and individuals.

Run to Remember 5k: Run to Remember coordinated by the University of Hawai'i at Hilo Cross Country Program. Entry fee: $20 (includes refreshments and $10 tax deductible donation to hospice). Call the University of Hawai'i at Hilo Athletics Department at 974-7520 for more information. Run registration begins at 3:30 p.m. under the large Pavilion at Wailoa State Park., run begins at 4 p.m. and wraps around Wailoa State Park.

Lights of Remembrance: Commemorate loved ones with a personalized lit luminary at which will be released on the water at sunset. Done in the "Toronagashi" style, lanterns are $15 (tax deductible donation to hospice) and may be reserved in advance by purchasing a ticket beginning April 28 at Hospice of Hilo. Limited number of lanterns available.

Live Music & Dinner: Live music begins at 4 p.m. featuring several bands including "Mid Life Crisis". $5 advance tickets for the kalua & cabbage plate dinner will be available at Hospice of Hilo beginning April 28.

Approaching 2010 - Addressing Hawai`i's Health Disparities
Pulama I Ke Ola Healthcare Conference at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo
Professional dialogue and discussion addressing the health of Hawai'i's people. Presenters will address the latest research and ways to meet many challenges facing our community, with special focus on Heart and Lung Health Issues, Cancer Care, Diabetes, Obesity, Mental Health, and Dementia. Featuring "Health: Right or Privilege?" with special guest speaker, Cheryl Easley, PhD, RN, President-Elect APHA this conference is designed to for those caring for our community. The Healing Journey: Adult Six-Week Grief Support Group
Summer Session begins July 9th
Offering a focused approach in addressing grief, the Healing Journey is an intensive 6 week grief support group designed to help adult participants better understand the grieving process and develop additional ways of coping. Though sharing, listening, supporting, and receiving support participants are able to begin healing from their loss in their own preferred way. Sessions include art therapy. For ages 18 and over, open to all who have experienced the death of a loved one. Group meets on Wednesdays from 5- 7 p.m. in the Hospice of Hilo Community Center. Pre-registration required. Hospice Volunteer Training
Serving as a hospice volunteer will challenge your spirit, fill your heart and enrich your life. Meet extraordinary people who will share this incredible journey with you. Volunteers are prepared for their role with a free, comprehensive training program. No previous experience necessary. Through education and training, hospice volunteers learn how to give the gift of the heart in providing emotional support, companionship and respite care to our patients and families. Annual Fall Youth Bereavement Camp: CAMP POHAI MALUHIA: A Hero's Journey
Kilauea Military Camp in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park
Camp Pohai Maluhia offers grieving youth traditional camp activities designed to facilitate the healing process in a safe and supportive environment. Two-day intensive educational camp open to all youth, ages 5-17, who have experienced the death of a loved one. Throughout the camp experience, youth are given the opportunity to learn about the grief process, share common experiences and develop healthy ways of coping with loss. Parents/guardians have the opportunity to meet con-currently to learn additional ways of supporting youth as well as coping with their own sense of grief. Camp Pohai Maluhia is a partnership of Hospice of Hilo and the Hawaii Island Bereavement Network. Pre-registration required. For camp application, please call 969-1733. Scholarship available.
