Annual Light Up a Life
“We listen to a lot of stories.”
-Pearl Lyman, Volunteer & Transitions Manager
When the whirlwind of the holidays has settled down, what will you really remember?
We are surrounded by an incredible 2,000,000 bits of information every second. The human mind can only process 126 bits of information every second. From all that swirls around us, it is from these 126 bits that we create our memories.
“It’s incredible,” says Pearl. “That amidst all of the holiday shopping madness, people see the Trees of Remembrance set up in front of the two Macy’s entrances.” People come year after year. Some since the Light Up a Life Trees of Remembrance were first put up 22 years ago.
People see the tree, they see the table set up with volunteers, they stop, they remember and they tell their stories. Hand written notes on paper ornaments, a smile of gratitude for all that Hospice of Hilo did for a loved one, sometimes a laugh at a memory that dances around and often a tear as the memory floats away to where it came from.
The Trees of Remembrance will be standing for another year begining in November, waiting for your visit.
We are alwaysl creating memories, let us ask these questions: What beautiful things are we noticing? What moments are we cherishing? What things are we willing to let go?
What stories are we creating for ourselves?
